New Yorker Magazine Interview with Haig Kalbian

  • 4/15 -- Haig V. Kalbian, Managing Partner, Kalbian Hagerty LLP, was recently interviewed by The New Yorker magazine about a $9 billion civil case involving his client, Glenn Stewart, a California resident and former chief executive of The International Banking Corporation (TIBC), a large bank in Bahrain.
    In 2011, Ahmad Hamad Al Gosaibi and Brothers (AHAB) filed a civil suit against Stewart in federal court in Los Angeles seeking $9 billion in damages for fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and conspiracy (among other claims) under the laws of California, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain.  After nearly two years of hotly contested litigation, Kalbian’s aggressive pretrial tactics forced AHAB to dismiss the case.

Saudi’s Algosaibis Settle Case Against Former Bank Exec

The Saudi family conglomerate Ahmad Hamad Algosaibi & Brothers has settled a lawsuit it brought two years ago in California against Glenn Stewart, the former chief executive of a Bahraini bank owned by the company. The settlement is a small step in a much bigger case in which the Algosaibis allege they were defrauded by Maan al Sanea, a Saudi businessman married to a member of the Algosaibi clan. Mr. al Sanea has denied claims that he and his Saad Group orchestrated a $9 billion fraud with the help of Mr. Stewart, an American who was alleged to be a key lieutenant in the scheme.

How Will FATCA Affect You?

On July 30, 2014, the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (“FATCA”) will go into full effect.  Signed into law in March 2010, FATCA adds new withholding tax and foreign asset disclosure provisions to the Internal Revenue Code in order to prevent and detect offshore tax evasion.  Congress enacted the new complex law to address perceived tax abuse by U.S. citizens through the use of foreign financial accounts and offshore accounts.
