E D & F MAN HAITIAN RELIEF FUND

To Support Relief, Rebuilding and Recovery Efforts

(March, 2010) -- In the aftermath of the devastating January 12 earthquake in Port au Prince, Haiti, Kalbian Hagerty LLP attorneys have been helping its’ client, E D & F Man Group, establish a humanitarian relief organization, E D & F Man Relief Fund, to support the relief, rebuilding and recovery efforts.

E D & F Man Group, through its business operations in Haiti, already has boots on the ground and will utilize its knowledge of the Haitian community to speed effective relief to the area. Kalbian Hagerty LLP is providing pro bono legal services to oversee the formation and administration of the Fund.

The United States has enacted legislation allowing taxpayers to claim a deduction for 2009 taxes for Haiti relief donations made after January 11, 2010 and before March 1, 2010.

  • The new law applies only to cash contributions
  • Cash contributions made by text message, check, and credit or debit card are also eligible for this accelerated deduction
  • The contributions must be made specifically for the relief of victims in areas affected by the January 12th earthquake in Haiti
  • In order to be deductible, contributions must be made to qualified charities and cannot be designated for the benefit of specific individuals or families
  • Contributions to foreign organizations are generally not deductible
  • A record of any deductible donations must be kept. For donations by text message, a phone bill will meet the requirement if it shows the name of the organization, and the date and amount of the contribution

  • In addition to the Port-au-Prince community, in the future the ED&F Man Relief Fund will serve other disaster-impacted communities in which E D & F Man Group conducts business.

Kalbian Hagerty LLP and ED&F Man Group previously collaborated to establish a Katrina relief fund in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2004. E D & F Man Katrina Relief Fund raised significant funds and completed some important relief projects in the New Orleans area.
